Order of Worship
The worship of the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church represents the rich tradition of the Reformed Church which understands its liturgy to be one representation of the great tradition of Christian worship extending to the days of the apostles. The order of worship progresses through five movements:
- Gathering – God’s Word calls us together in praise.
- Adoration – Adoration begins true worship in self-forgetfulness and awe. As we contemplate God’s holiness and love, we recall much in us is unholy and unlovely, so we confess our sins and hear the promise of forgiveness from the scriptures.
- The Word – Reformed worship engages in a conversation with the scriptures from the call to worship that begins the service to the benediction that concludes it; but at the heart of the Reformed service is what has been called the "Liturgy of the Word." The scriptures are read or sung and interpreted in the sermon. We respond to God’s truth by praying for our world and offering our gifts to God.
- The Lord’s Supper – As Christ invites us to the holy table we gather in Thanksgiving (Eucharist) remembering not only the life, death and resurrection, but also his presence at the table and his coming in triumph in the fullness of a kingdom of love, justice and peace.
- Sending – Having praised God and heard God’s gracious hope for the world, we leave worship to serve God. In the benediction we are given God’s blessing that we may share it with all we meet. We live in a world desperately in need of a Word of Blessing. In worship God prepares us not only to speak such a word but to be a blessing to others.
